Throughout July Answer Cancer will be joining other cancer charities and health organisations in marking Ethnic Minority Cancer Awareness Month.
Research by Macmillan shows that Black men are twice as likely to get Prostate Cancer compared to White men. Meanwhile, Asian people are between 1.5 and 3 times more likely to get Liver Cancer than the White population.
We know that early diagnosis saves lives, however there is a lower awareness of cancer signs & symptoms within BME communities, added to a reluctance to access health services and cancer screening.
Here at Answer Cancer we want to ensure that everyone has access to information about cancer and screening regardless of ethnicity or background. We are doing this by working with community and faith groups, producing information in different community languages, and tackling existing barriers to accessing services, such as cultural or religious concerns, language issues, taboos and myths, and socio-economic barriers.
